Oolloo Station

Magic sunsets every night, entertaining company, a billabong full of wildlife including crocs, easy access to the famous Daly river, and a few drinks around the fire… what more could you possibly want from a farm stay?! Sam and I lucked out big time and got the chance to take care of our friends Kirsty and Steve’s home stay in the Douglas Daly Region for two weeks. We first came to visit them for the weekend and few hours after we had left they gave us a call to come back to work for them. We started running a bit low in the fun funds so we could not pass up this opportunity. We had the place to ourselves for two weeks running the camp sites and their beautiful home. We had so much fun. Sam was able to get creative and build them two tables along with an airplane made out of 44 gallon drums. Steve loves planes and has an airstrip on the property so we thought it was fitting. We are hoping they’ll put a motor in it and zip around the station!!! We had such a blast, it was a great experience for both of us. Meeting new people nearly every day was a highlight, we made some good friends and had far too many laughs. Steve and Kirsty have an amazing place and no doubt the best spot to relax and have a fish for a few days. Sam put in a lot of hours into fishing while we were there and he finally caught a barramundi on the morning we were leaving. Being a vegetarian I really didn’t think I’d end up eating it but since it was a sustainable way of catching the fish I gave it a try, and let me tell you… best fish I’ve ever had in my life. I cant even explain how fresh it was! We cannot wait to visit Oolloo Station again, hopefully in the wet season next time!

Butterfly Gorge

For my birthday, we decided to explore Butterfly Gorge, a hidden gem tucked away in the Douglas Daly Region. Neither of us had heard about it before but we knew we were dying for a swim. It was was stunning! A quiet waterhole that’s not only easy accessible with 4WD but really nice to swim in. Plus it had a sandy beach so we were set. I just love finding places that we haven’t researched or heard of, it always feels a little bit more special to us. The water was pretty dark so I was hesitant to jump in because of the crocs but they manage the gorges for saltys. To my Canadian friends who may not know, Salt water crocodiles are dangerous; they’ll eat anything and anyone including their own young! Fresh water crocodiles are smaller and have no interest in humans unless you are annoying them. Park rangers do big checks after the wet season and set up large traps for salt water crocodiles to make sure it’s safe for everyone!
